Local Information

The city of Montpellier

Montpellier is located in the South of France, a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. It is an exceptional destination.

A walk in Montpellier’s historic center is a delight in itself. The city has kept some reminders of its past with typical narrow streets that lead a curious walker from the central Place de la Comédie, to the vibrant Place Jean Jaurès or to the calm Place de la Canourgue.

A dynamic town, there are always a number of exciting new developments taking place, all designed to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants -tram lines which cut across this pedestrian-friendly city, cycling paths, sports facilities, old town museums and galleries presenting works by the region’s best contemporary artists. It is a city where cafés and restaurants, festivals and cultural shows are plenty.

Its historic charm, active cultural life and natural beauty make Montpellier an ideal place to be.

The city has medieval origins; its Faculty of Medicine and Royal Botanic gardens are the oldest in France. It is the 8th largest city in France, and the fastest growing in the country over the past 25 years. Nearly one third of the population are students.

No vaccinations are required to enter France.

Mosquitoes should not yet be an issue in May, especially in the city center, but repellent might be useful during some of the field tours.

Public holidays

The 8th of May is public holiday in France. It celebrates the end of the 2nd World War.

Many stores (including the main shopping mall Le Polygone in the city center) and restaurants will be open, however.
